Caregiver Tips working with alzheimers and dementia patients with Memory Jogging Puzzles and Memory Match Games.

When working with residents, I look at the images on puzzles and memory cards for details or objects. Look for a way to engage the person in conversation.

Talk about the storytelling theme

Watch their facial expressions

Observe their body language

Hear those grunts

React to their actions, expressions and encourage them

Be patient

• Your loved one may want to touch and study the images, rather than doing the puzzle or play cards, that's okay. Talk about it.

Observe them, it is very interesting

If they lose focus, gently bring their attention back to activity.

Don’t become frustrated

Don't hurry them, when they are slow in their movements and decisions, be patient, they do not want to make a mistake.

Do not say Don't

Do not take it personally if they are not interested in working with you or the activities.

Try another time and remember, they may not remember the first time they tried, they may not remember you.

Realize this is not a test, there is no failure and you want your time together to be an enjoyable experience for both
of you.

Relax, go with the flow.

Try not to ask questions with yes and no answers.

Explain Patiently and Slowly

Showing them is better than telling them.

~I worked in a Nursing Home for 27 years before retired. I worked in the Activity Department and began using the memory jogging puzzles after my retirement when I started Volunteering at Day Care and Retirement Homes.

The caregiver kit has been the best thing that I have ever seen to keep a residents attention and get them to reminisce about themselves and others from the past years.

I would recommend every Activity Director have this kit in there department for a weekly activity or an extra, for I know it is a crowd pleaser and will put smiles on everyone’s faces. It’s easy and makes everyone talk and visit with one another.~

Thank you so much, Birdie Scroggins, AD, CAP ~

~I discovered early on in the alzheimers journey
with my dad that doing simple jigsaw puzzles provided him such a sense of self-esteem.

However it was almost impossible to find puzzles commercially that weren't too childish.

Your puzzles have just the right number of pieces that he can handle without frustration, and the Rockwell themes are all so lovely.~

I am one satisfied customer. Thanks again!

Memory Exercise Cards
While testing the puzzles with residents, I thought it would be great to have cards with the same images and good for repetition. My mother loved playing cards and so did the lady I was working with on that first day of testing.

In her 90’s, the oldest in my group, she worked with the puzzles and cards best. She gave me great feedback and was a joy to work with.

Florence was amazing, helped others and was very detail oriented. The date on one of the puzzles was her fathers birthday and stimulated memories.

I learned many things from her and one very important detail. Her vision was bad and while working with the prototype cards, she could only see the shadows on some cards. From that feedback all of the cards are oversized with great detail. Now I have a Low Vision gossip card game.

While testing the MatchMate cards, a concentration game, I realized when played face down, frustration sets in easily and it was to be a fun activity. As you know, when some people become frustrated they do not want to play anymore.

I made my own rules for success and a fun time for everyone. Just go with the flow, play the card games face up and we do not play with all the cards, start with just a few and add more slowly.

I feel face down is too difficult for most and they will become frustrated. Instructions included.

Today, there are ten Norman Rockwell - The Saturday Evening Post Wooden Puzzles; three Memory Exercise Card Games: gossips, MatchMate and What’s Mis ing? and more interesting things on the drawing board.

New puzzles from The Saturday Evening Post by Sarah S. Weber and a new Memory Game "Happy Days" from her rare collection

Testimonial
~I'm also pleased with the quality of the cards and the puzzles. I've noticed in recent times that, because my mother has arthritis, it's harder for her to grip things.

So, the fact that the cards are on very thick stock and the puzzle pieces are thicker wooden pieces will make it much easier for her.~

Dawn W - Jamaica

I feel Memory Jogging Puzzles and Memory Games are enjoyed because:

puzzles can be completed easily, and in short amount of time

puzzle and cards are easy to handle

themes are storytelling (easy to talk about)

pictures tug at emotions

patients relate to someone or something in picture

completion will give your loved one a good feeling of success

Norman Rockwell - The Saturday Evening Post are from their era. Many remember him and the magazine.

Sarah S Weber - The Saturday Evening Post - Happy Days Collection tugs at memories of yesterday.

Guaranteed to bring smiles to everyone and joy working with these puzzles and memory cards.

Watch for Signals

Recalling testing at a Day Care Center, there was a gentleman who aced all of the 6 & 12 piece puzzles easily.

As I pulled out the cards, I asked him to help me, and he matched all of the images without any problem.

He said "this is easy".

(ok, we'll go to the next level)

Then, I laid them face down, in minutes, not able to find matches, he gathered the cards saying “I don’t want to play anymore”.

(in other words, it is not fun, if you cannot succeed)

It is better to see
Smiles rather than tears

Participation instead of "no"

A Good Feeling in place of frustration

Help your loved one learn to have feelings again.

Are you are hoping to see a smile again or perhaps a way to communicate with your loved one.

You are in the right place.

Anyone walking into the room will see the happiness, hear conversations and laughter.

Many remember Norman Rockwell - The Saturday Evening Post.

Memory Jogging Puzzles and Memory Match Games jog their memory.

Replace solitude with socializing.

Switch No with reaching hands and smiles.

Appear focused, complete task and more.

ALL handled the wood pieces, puzzles and cards easily. Some needed to be shown what to do, the first time.

In groups, they helped
each other and laughed.

All activities have been a hit.

Many times I have heard
"I wish I would have found your puzzles and card games sooner."

5 Minutes

My friend smiled a BIG smile and started to tell me how she was feeling that day.

I asked her why she wasn’t playing bingo, she replied, “I would rather do crossword puzzles, maybe tomorrow.” (Bingo was being played in the same room).

I told her I wanted to show her something and handed her my Songs of Yesterday booklet. She started flipping through the pages, looking at the pictures and then started from the beginning, reading the words and singing the songs.

She was entertaining me rather than I entertaining her.

Each and every page, she remembered the tune.

When she came to “In the Garden” she started to reminisce. continued
